North West chemical company earns EcoVadis gold rating for global sustainability

Bury’s Maker Industrial, part of leading chemical supplier and manufacturer The Rakem Group, has been awarded EcoVadis Gold for being in the top five percent of businesses globally for environmentally sustainability and social performance.

Specialising in liquid and powder contract manufacturing for industries including DIY, coatings, inks, paper, plastics and construction, Maker is ranked in the 98th percentile for environmental, social and governance performance (ESG).

Assessed across four key areas – environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement, Maker achieved an overall score of 83/100 with environmental performance scoring an impressive 92/100.

Philippa Glover, Managing Director of The Rakem Group, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the team to have achieved EcoVadis Gold, a recognition of our Group’s long-standing dedication to people, planet, profit, partnerships and growing responsibly.

“As an SME operating in a sector often dominated by larger players, it’s especially rewarding to be ranked among the top 2% of businesses worldwide for our sustainability performance. SMEs are increasingly recognised as key drivers of innovation and sustainability across UK manufacturing and structured benchmarking is critical to scaling impact and building resilience.

“With SME’s making up 99 per cent of all businesses the fact that less than 10 percent hold formal sustainability certifications makes Maker’s achievement especially notable. It reflects our team’s continued commitment to running a business in a way we can all be proud of.”

Benchmarking over 150k companies across 200 industries EcoVadis is the world’s top business sustainability evidence-based assessor.

Dan Bower, founder of DBIM and former QHSE Manager for the group, added: “This result isn’t just a badge on the wall—it shows how we’ve embedded strong ESG into our daily operations over the last five years. EcoVadis has given us a platform to measure progress, learn, and grow as a team. We remain ambitious to build on this success and deliver even greater value for our customers, people, and the planet.”

Maker achieved its first score of 54/100 in 2020 and having successfully embedded sustainability into operations, people, and long-term strategy, now has its sights on the highest Platinum medal which would put in the top one per cent globally.
